Splicing And Its Steps

Splicing and its steps are very important to study about or working on fiber optic cables. There are many time that the people working on fiber optic need to have two or more fiber optic cable and joint them together. To do the same work, they have the option of using mechanical splicing and Fusion splicing. As we already discuss that the mechanical splicing is temporary splicing as well as its splicing loss is always more than fusion splice loss such 0.5 dB and use Mechanical tool named as BFC (Bare fiber connector) to do the splicing.

On the other hand Fusion splice is not temporary splice, it is a permanent splice and its splicing loss is also always less than mechanical splicing.

Acceptable loss of Fusion splicing

The loss occurs on fiber during splicing depends on different factors, such as Electrodes life, Dust or impurities on Mirror or on other parts of the splicing machine. its also depend on striping, cleaning and cleaving. So the acceptable loss that occurs during splicing is 0.02 dB.

Splicing and its Steps

Here are the steps that must be taken during fusion splicing.

  • Stripping of Cable or Fiber

Before we goes to do the splicing jobs we are require first of all to prepare or strip the fiber optic cable that are being join together. During Stripping or preparation of fiber cable all of the protective coating and jackets removed along with different kinds of layer such water blocking tape, identity tape loss tube and everything etc except the fiber themselves. There is very thin layer known as Buffer also remove form fiber using the tools known as stripper.

  • Cleaning of Fiber

After removing of all the coating as well as buffer from fiber optic, then there is also some impurities present on the surface of fiber which lead to increase fiber splicing loss. So in order to clean the surface of fiber, we using Alcohol and tissue to remove impurities from surface of fiber.

  • Cleaving of Fiber

For better splicing and For low splice loss, splice machine need to cut the fiber on 90 angle. For this application to Cut the fiber on 90 angle we use tool known as Cleaver. So Cleaver is a tool used to cut the fiber on 90 angle and the process of cutting fiber on 90 angle called cleaving.

  • Protector OR Sleeve

The protector provide protection to the joint place of fiber optic. Inside the protector there is very thin steel wire, which provide extra protections.

  • Splicing

After all of the above step the fiber is finally ready to joint together. So we use splice machine to joint two fiber with each other with the help of electric arc or welding. After splicing of two fiber we can’t be able to move the fiber freely. So we move the protector on the splice position of fiber and use Electric heat. Electric heat shrink the protector on splice place and fiber is able to take every place with safety.
